Which States Are Hit Hardest By Failure To Fund Children’s Health Program

The Gist: Over the weekend, Congress allowed funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which covers nearly 9 million children in low-income families, to lapse—failing to pass a reauthorization by Saturday’s deadline after spending most of the year attempting to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The expiration of the program will not affect all states equally. Some are already scrambling to move money around to make sure no child sees their coverage lapse while others have a healthy amount in reserves that will last them well into next year if Congress does not act.

Bannon: It’d Be The ‘End Of Everything’ If Trump Turned Left On Gun Control

The Gist: While the attack in Las Vegas this weekend has been called the worst mass shooting in modern history, allies of President Donald Trump told Axios they don’t think the President will pivot left on the gun control debate like he did on the debt ceiling.

Police Found 23 Firearms In Las Vegas Shooter’s Hotel Room

The Gist: The gunman who opened fire on a music festival Sunday night, killing 59 people and injuring more than 500 others, had 23 firearms in his hotel room at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Las Vegas police department Assistant Sheriff Todd Fasulo told reporters Monday night.

From The Reporter's Notebook

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that it would be “premature” to discuss gun control, TPM's Matt Shuham reported, following a mass shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night that has now left 59 dead and hundreds more wounded. “A motive is yet to be determined, and it would be premature for us to discuss policy when we don’t fully know all of the facts or what took place last night,” she said at a press briefing. Sanders also mentioned mentioned Chicago’s strict gun laws and said “that certainly hasn’t helped there.”

Agree Or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: "Beyond guns – which are absolutely, absolutely necessary to address and dramatically restrict access to – we need to recognize that we don’t have mass violence only because of guns. We have so many guns because America is a deeply violent society. That goes back generations. We have recurrent massacres because we are awash in firearms and also because we are a deeply violent society. Nothing so deeply rooted in our culture can be easily changed. But we could change it. We cannot and do not because at the end of the day we accept it."

Say What?!

"What happened in Las Vegas is in many ways a miracle."

- President Donald Trump saying Tuesday that the deadly shooting in Las Vegas was “in many ways a miracle” because of the law enforcement response to the shooting.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: "The connections between the Trump crowd and Putin/ various favored Russian oligarchs/ Russian mobsters of all stripes (in itself more or less a Venn Diagram of a three-ring circus) have long since passed the level of crochet and now approaches the delicate work of an Aubisson weaving. Keep spinning."
